The face of art varies immensely, and the creative threads of artists often lie hidden behind the light and shadow of their works, awaiting deeper exploration. The Guangdong Museum of Art has always focused on the diverse ecology and individual expressions of contemporary art, firmly believing that every artist is a unique coordinate—their thoughts and practices together map the spiritual landscape of our time. To this end, we are launching the “Understanding the Artist” series. This is not merely a conventional introduction to artists and their works, but a long-term scholarly endeavor and a practice of public communication. Through this platform, we strive to gradually build, with sustained thematic presentations, a detailed, multi-dimensional, and archivally valuable database of contemporary artists. Let us together, through continuous reading and dialogue, witness and write the history that is unfolding.

In this exhibition,The excursion to Nanpi ,the first theme is the Spiritual Extension of Media and Technology. Yang Fudong visualizes the dynamism and dreamlike narratives of contemporary China through cinematic mise-en-scène, allowing viewers to drift through landscapes of existence. His modern transformation of the Wei and Jin dynasties' aesthetics is renowned. Wang Guofeng uses monumental architectural photography to precisely dissect the relationship between power, history, and the individual. Meanwhile, Xie Molin presents a new aesthetic intersection where human labor meets technical precision through paintings realized via mechanical apparatuses.

1971 年生于北京,中国现代影像艺术家、导演。1990 年代初开动从事电影与影像创作,经久以 35 毫米胶片拍摄,现从事电影、影相及影像安设创作。其作品以口角影像、平缓叙事与诗性视觉著称,探讨历史顾虑、社会施行与个体精神之间的张力。曾插足威尼斯双年展、沙迦双年展、亚太现代艺术三年展及德国卡塞尔文件展等迫切海外展览,并在伦敦、纽约、维也纳、苏黎世等地举办个展。
Yang Fudong (b. 1971, Beijing, China) is a contemporary Chinese video artist and director. He began working with film and video in the early 1990s, primarily shooting on 35mm film, creating cinematic and video installations known for their poetic, black-and-white visual language. His work meditates time, memory, and the tensions between social reality and the individual psyche. He has participated in major exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale, documenta, and the Asia Pacific Triennial.

当作杨福东早期摄像艺术的代表性作品之一,《我并非免强你》以私有的影像谈话,回复了现代语境下个体抒发与表情勾通的命题,彰显了艺术家对影像前言的前锋探索。作品禁受快速编著的手法,画面中枢围绕“我并非免强你”这句话语张开,将12至14位东说念主物连皆集联,虽弱化了光显的面部玄虚,LOL投注官网却以动态韵律构建出私有的视觉张力。

As one of the representative works of Yang Fudong's early video art,I Am Not ForcingYouresponds to the proposition of individual expression and emotional connection in the modern context with its unique video language,demonstrating the artist's pioneering exploration of the video medium. Adopting the technique of fast editing, the work centers on the phrase " I Am Not Forcing You ", connecting 12 to 14 characters in a coherent sequence. Although it weakens the clear facial contours, it constructs a unique visual tension through dynamic rhythm.

现代影像艺术家,1967 年生于中国辽宁,现生计、使命于北京。曾就读中央好意思术学院中国画系与好意思术史系,创作珍视社会施行与历史顾虑。作品屡次插足光州双年展、哈瓦那双年展、罗马国立现代好意思术馆、白兔好意思术馆、首尔市立好意思术馆等迫切海外展览,活跃于海外现代影像艺术领域。
Wang Guofeng (b. 1967, Liaoning, China) lives and works in Beijing. Wang studied Chinese painting and art history at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. His works focus on social realities and historical memory. His works have been exhibited at significant international venues, such as the Gwangju Biennale, Havana Biennale, and the National Museum of Modern Art in Rome. He is active in the international contemporary visual arts field.

2005 年开始,艺术家以影相者的眼神开动珍视前苏联和东欧的成立谱系,即对前苏联和东欧时期的历史成立进行了系统拍摄,具体通过对成立谱系、成立考古和成立遗存的比拟考虑,以辨析这些成立景不雅之间的异同,进而视觉性地揭示了它们在特定历史阶段所承载的社会假想与符号内涵。基于这么的念念路,艺术家从情势图像起程,将不同国度及地区在左近社会理念下催生的成立片断从头团员,生成了一幅具有别样社会特征的视觉景不雅,蕴含着宏不雅与微不雅、集体与个体、历史与顾虑、空间与时候等内涵,以此探讨其内在教训之间的深层社会好意思学的勾通。历史正渐行渐远,顾虑也在飞逝的时候中不断被过滤与重塑……
Since the beginning of 2005, the artist has focused through the lens of a photographer—on the architectural lineage of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. This has involved systematically photographing historical buildings from these regions. Through a comparative study of architectural genealogy, building archaeology, and architectural heritage, he analyze the similarities and differences among these constructed landscapes, thereby visually revealing the social ideals and symbolic meanings they bore during specific historical periods. Following this conceptual approach, and starting from the formal qualities of the image, the Artist reassemble architectural fragments produced under similar social ideologies across different countries and regions to generate a visual landscape with distinct social characteristics. This work embodies tensions such as macro and micro, collective and individual, history and memory, space and time, using these dialectics to explore the deeper socio-aesthetic connections within their intrinsic experiences. History recedes ever further, while memory is continually filtered and reshaped in the swift passage of time...

Xie Molin
1979 年生于浙江温州,毕业于中央好意思术学院壁画系及英国爱丁堡好意思术学院绘画专科,现使命生计于北京。他以 “绘画机器” 为中枢展创始作,将本事介入绘画历程,探索情势与不雅念的联系,呈现现代文化中本事与艺术交汇的可能性。曾在复星艺术中心、北京公社、佩斯香港等机构举办个展,并在列奥尼格博物馆、龙好意思术馆、UCCA 等迫切机构展出。
Xie Molin (b. 1979, Wenzhou, China), graduated from the Mural Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and the Painting Department of the Edinburgh College of Art in the UK, a Beijing-based artist who merges technology and painting through his “painting machine” practice. His work examines the interplay between form, process, and concept presenting the intersection of technology and art in contemporary culture. Xie has exhibited at institutions such as Fosun Art Center, Beijing Commune, and Pace Hong Kong.

The artist has recently created a new set of eight white acrylic works, adhering to his machine painting technique. In the pure white, similarities and differences, evolution and contradictions are presented more directly, reflecting Xie Molin's deeper exploration andunderstanding of reality through his unique artistic creation method.
